Save the Eagle Day at Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge
Pacific Region, January 9, 2005
Print Friendly Version
On Sunday, January 9, the Spirit Mountain Casino and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service joined together to cosponsor a Save the Eagle Day at Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge. The day's events began with a Tribal blessing of the Baskett Slough Refuge by members of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, operators of the Spirit Mountain Casino, and the Casino's donation of a new spotting scope to the Refuge. The new spotting scope will replace one stolen earlier this year from the Refuge's Highway 22 Wildlife Viewing Kiosk.

After the initial ceremonies, Casino and Willamette Valley National Wildlife Refuge Complex staff and volunteers from the Salem Audubon Society were on hand at three viewing areas to assist visitors with eagle and waterfowl viewing and to provide information about eagles, waterfowl, the Refuge and the importance of the eagle in the Native American culture.

Baskett Slough's two semi-permanent resident adult bald eagles were not observed on the Refuge until about midday. Upon arriving, these two eagles perched in trees near the Refuge's Office, giving everyone a great view. An additional opportunity to get a close-up view of a bald eagle was provided by the Oregon Zoo. Staff from the zoo put an adult bald eagle, peregrine falcon and other raptors on display at the Refuge's Office between 12:00 and 1:00 PM.

The Save the Eagle Day Event provided environmental education and wildlife viewing opportunities to about 150 visitors who braved the chilly weather. Visitors were excited about the opportunity to view the eagles and waterfowl and interact with the Casino, Audubon and Refuge staff helping with the event. The Refuge is located about 10 miles west of Salem, Oregon and provides some of the best waterfowl and eagle viewing opportunities in the Willamette Valley from October through April.
