Okefenokee NWR partners with International Paper Company to protect red cockaded woodpecker habitat
Southeast Region, December 16, 2004
Print Friendly Version
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and International Paper (IP), the nation's largest paper company, signed a memorandum of understanding, December 16, to create and manage 6,700 acres of feeding habitat for the red-cockaded woodpecker (RCW) at the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge (NWR). Remarked Okefenokee NWR Refuge Manager, Skippy Reeves, ?the agreement with IP supports one of the missions of the refuge, which is to provide habitat for endangered species and perform habitat restoration.? The agreement is an extension of IP's ongoing commitment to the FWS to stabilize the population of RCW's, and improve wildlife habitat on its forested areas.
