Science class removes invasive Chinese tallow trees at Lacassine NWR
Southeast Region, December 1, 2004
Print Friendly Version
Twenty 9th and 10th grade students from Bethel Christian School (Jennings, Louisiana) volunteered a full day removing invasive Chinese tallow trees at the Lacassine NWR headquarters display pond. The science class, led by teacher/pastor Frank Walker, coordinated the effort with Acting Refuge Manager Bryan Winton. The students pulled tallow trees, loaded them onto a trailer, and transported the plucked pests to an upland location for a future prescribed fire. The event gave local youth an opportunity to become educated and gain first-hand experience about the severity and extent of invasive plant species on native habitats in southwest Louisiana.
