Bird feeders always bring joy into people's lives; it can?t be helped. The beautiful songs, brilliant colors, lovely markings ? Mother Nature's flying artwork. There are bird feeders and then there is the ?Excalibird? feeder, the latest design of Lower Suwannee's Wildlife Biologist, Steve Barlow. It's the finest feeding facility in the neighborhood. Suet racks, a thistle sock and two tube feeders are attached to the main feeder, which is protected from the sun and rain by a tin roof. Refuge staff view the birds through a scope set up by the window and get shots like these. Some call Steve Barlow a habitat-building-machine. He is a wood craftsman as well as a scientist, and develops these great condos and cafes for critters of the refuge. He started out with bat houses, and now parks and schools from surrounding counties want him to assist them with their bat house programs.
