Virginia Field Office Recovery Action Teams Spark Endangered Species Efforts
Northeast Region, December 20, 2004
Print Friendly Version
The Virginia Ecological Services Field Office has created three recovery action teams to energize recovery of three species: James spinymussel (Pleurobema collina), Roanoke logperch (Percina rex), and northeastern beach tiger beetle (Cicindela dorsalis dorsalis). With our partners, Virginia Field Office staff have conducted surveys, mapped locations, done geographic information system (computer-based)analyses, identified habitat loss, identified threats, developed plans to address threats, developed protocols for reintroductions, and conducted outreach activities. With the creation of these recovery action teams, the Service is showing leadership with our partners, and together we have initiated eight recovery actions listed in the recovery plans.

Our partners are as follows: U.S. Forest Service; U.S. Geological Survey; U.S. Natural Resources Conservation Service; Federal Highway Administration; U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; Federal Energy Regulatory Commission; Virginia Departments of Game and Inland Fisheries, Environmental Quality, Conservation and Recreation, Agriculture and Consumer Services, and Transportation; Maryland Natural Heritage; Univ. of Richmond, Virginia Tech; Virginia Commonwealth Univ.; Randolph Macon College; Univ. of Massachusetts-Amherst; National Fish and Wildlife Foundation; Field Museum of Natural History (Chicago); The Nature Conservancy; Conservation Fisheries, Inc.; Cowpasture River Preservation Association; Stream Watch; and many local soil and water conservation districts.
