Dignitaries Celebrate Saltmarsh Restoration at Sachuest Point Refuge
Northeast Region, December 3, 2004
Print Friendly Version
A vision first developed more than 20 years ago was realized on December 3, 2004, when members of Rhode Island's congressional delegation joined staff, volunteers, Friends, and project coordinators in celebrating completion of a significant landfill remediation and saltmarsh restoration effort at Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge. The former Middletown municipal landfill was incorporated into the refuge in 1973. Because the landfill was abandoned and never properly closed, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency identified it as a future source of air and water pollution to the immediate environment, including the adjacent Sakonnet River.

Following remediation assessments performed in the late 1990s, an effort began in earnest during late 2003 to remove a large quantity of the refuse and to recycle many materials now valued by society. As a result, the site now contains 15 acres of saltmarsh reclaimed from the landfill. The remaining landfill area has been contained and capped using the latest technology to eliminate potential leaching of contaminate to the aquatic environment. The consolidated portion of the landfill has been sown with native grass seed.

The site's rolling swales will complement the stunning coastline vistas enjoyed by the tens of thousands of visitors the refuge hosts each year. American black ducks and Atlantic brant have already begun using the marsh as resting and feeding habitat.
