Journal Entry   Back Private Stewardship Grant Project to Reintroduce Prairie Dogs in Southern New Mexico is Successful Southwest Region, November 30, 2004 Print Friendly Version On November 30, 2004, Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program - New Mexico staff visited a project area where black-tailed prairie dogs have been reintroduced. Black-tailed prairie dogs are recognized as a species of concern by the State of New Mexico. The project was funded by the Private Stewardship Grant Program in 2003 and is administered by the Partners Program. Prairie dogs were captured from an Air Force Base last summer and transported to grasslands in Sierra County where artificial burrows had been constructed to give them a head start in their new home. Protection from predators and food were provided for the first few days. Approximately 5 acres are currently occupied by the relocated population of prairie dogs. Prairie dogs were observed using the artificial burrows and burrows excavated by the prairie dogs since their release last summer.
