KENAI: Refuge Receives a New (4 - legged) Staff Member
Alaska Region, November 14, 2004
Print Friendly Version
Kenai National Wildlife Refuge recently received a new staff member: Samson, a 2 year old black lab. Samson and Refuge Officer/handler Rob Barto form a new K-9 unit for the Refuge. Use of dogs for resource management is nothing new, and is receiving increased attention nationwide; however, this is the first K-9 program for Kenai. Samson's training will include detection of a variety of wildlife species as well as common illegal drugs. In addition to use for wildlife poaching cases and search for a variety of evidence, the dog will also be used routinely for search and rescue activities for lost or missing persons within the 2 million acre refuge.
