Journal Entry   Back Rare Avian Visitor to Texas found on Anahuac NWR Southwest Region, November 24, 2004 Print Friendly Version A Fork-tailed Flycatcher (Tyrannus savanna) made a short appearance on Anahuac NWR in November. This species nests in Central and South America and southern populations migrate north to tropical regions during the non-breeding season. The most likely scenario is that this individual overshot its wintering grounds and found its way to Texas. The bird was observed utilizing prairie grassland habitats on the refuge over a two-day period. Word of its presence quickly spread in the birding community, and over 50 visitors came to the refuge within a few hours of its discovery. Refuge Volunteer Colin Shields hosted impromptu tours for thirteen visitors. Once officially accepted, this sighting will mark the only the 14th record of this species for Texas.
