Southeast Region, October 1, 2004
Print Friendly Version
Wet ?N Wild Festival is held each year at Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center complexin Decatur, AL. The festival theme is watershed protection and enhancement through awareness and positive management of resources. The program is offered to Morgan County 5th graders as part of the grade curriculum. Approximately 1,200 students participated in the three-day event in 2004.

Resource professionals from the local area volunteer at five different stations set up on the grounds of the Visitor Center complex. The stations include watershed protection, recycling, wildlife of the wetlands, water pollution, and waterfowl management. Students move between stations every half hour, with presentations lasting approximately 20 minutes. Prior to the festival, each participating school student has an opportunity to submit a 'sculpture? made entirely of recycled material. The sculptures are brought to the Visitor Center for judging and display. The winners are awarded ribbons and their artwork is displayed for a short period of time at the Visitor Center.

Sponsors and volunteers include the Flint Creek Watershed Project (NRCS), U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, City of Decatur, and the Morgan County Commission.
