Gila Trout Stocking in Black Canyon and Little Creek
Southwest Region, November 19, 2004
Print Friendly Version
During 16-17 November 2004 a total of 4,320 year class '03 Gila trout of Main Diamond lineage, average lenght 7.5 in., were stocked into two recovery streams, Black Canyon and Little Creek. In addition, 990 year class '04 Gila trout, also of Main Diamond lineage and average length 2.8 in., were stocked along with the larger fish. Black Canyon stockings were conducted by personnel from Mora NFHTC, Federal Aid, New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, and New Mexico Fishery Resources Office (NMFRO) and were accomplished from roads and stream crossings in a reach bordered by, but not included in wilderness. The Little Creek stockings, including assistance from USFS personnel, required the use of 10 pack mules and additional riding mules and horses to transport the Gila trout ca. 5 miles into backcountry habitats. U.S. Forest Service and NMFRO provided all horses and mules for stocking efforts.
