The 9th annual Ding Darling Days give Floridians fun times after weeks of hurricane damage and clean
Southeast Region, October 15, 2004
Print Friendly Version
The J. N. ?Ding? Darling National Wildlife Refuge celebrated its 9th annual Ding Darling Days with a week of excitng events October 10-16. They included birding and kayak tours, book signings, and lectures on topics such as the Calusa Indians and an inspirational tale of one man's journey to the top of Mt. Everest. The week culminated in Saturday's Family Fun Day, which included conservation exhibits, live animal presentations, a lecture and book signing by David Lendt, author of Ding Darling's biography, and a presentation by the current Federal Duck Stamp Artist, Scot Storm. Despite damage to the refuge and to Sanibel Island during Hurricane Charley, the week's events were a huge success. The turnout for Saturday's Family Fun Day was one of the best the refuge has seen with over 2000 people, especially the attendance by families. Many people were heard saying how nice it was to have something fun to do instead of worrying about the damage and cleanup that has occupied most people's thoughts after the hurricane.
