Journal Entry   Back AK MARITIME: Underway for Conservation - M/V Tiglax Logs 17th Season Plying North Pacific Alaska Region, November 23, 2004 Print Friendly Version The M/V Tiglax, a 120-foot 6-crew research vessel commissioned by the FWS in 1987, traveled 15,430 nautical miles over 144 days in 2004, logged during several runs between its home port in Homer to the end of the Aleutian Island chain. The M/V Tiglax (meaning "eagle" in the Native Aleut/Unungan language) supports the refuge's seabird and marine mammal monitoring, invasive species eradication, and marine research programs. The crew safely and expertly assisted 123 passengers from the refuge, other FWS divisions, government agencies, and various universities from the US, Japan, Russia and Canada. The M/V Tiglax visited 52 islands, and offloaded and re-supplied 21 remote field camps. The vessel crew excels in transporting people and gear on and off islands, assisting in biological surveys, and providing SCUBA dive support to researchers. The M/V Tiglax has gained an excellent reputation within the science community as ?the? vessel to charter for work in Alaska's nearshore waters, and the refuge turns away dozens of partner requests every year. The 2005 schedule is already booked, and includes a northward journey into the Bering Sea to visit the refuge's St. Matthew Island, ranked as the most remote location in Alaska.
