Sea Lamprey Control Efforts Conducted in Four Areas of Lake Champlain Basin
Northeast Region, October 31, 2004
Print Friendly Version
Chemical treatments have been conducted in four areas of the Lake Champlain Basin as part of the 2004 sea lamprey control program. This program is carried out by the states of New York and Vermont and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service through the Lake Champlain Fish and Wildlife Management Cooperative. Sea lamprey control is an important component of efforts to restore landlocked Atlantic salmon and lake trout to Lake Champlain. The fisheries generate over $100 million for the area's economy.

The Saranac River delta was treated with granular bayluscide while the Great Chazy River, Mount Hope Brook, and the Winooski River were each treated with TFM.

The 2004 treatments controlled lamprey populations in four areas of substantial production. Over 800,000 ammocoetes were eliminated this year and treatments will prevent the potential addition of many parasites to the lake over the next four years. The results of treatment will not be seen until the summer or fall of 2005, at which time we expect to see a reduction in lamprey wounds on host species.

Continued sea lamprey control on these four systems, in conjunction with control in other areas, will enhance efforts to restore salmon and lake trout and improve these economically important fisheries.
