Southwest Region, November 13, 2004
Print Friendly Version
The fourth annual Family Day was hosted at the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge on November 13, 2004. The openhouse event featured the opening of the Discovery Center. The event, provides a showcase of environmental educational opportunities including bug sweeping, touch tanks, miroscopes, bird banding and guided walking and van tours. In addition, the junior angler program and waterfowl clinics were presented this year. Sixty volunteers from the Friends of Brazoria Refuges, Brazosport Birders, Forest Bird Research Group, 4H, Texas Master Naturalist and Sea Center help to put on the event each year.

This years event brought over 700 visitors (a record) out to the refuge. Many of which were first-time visitors. A large number of visitors were from the Houston Area, thanks to an article in the Houston Chronicle. The article, written by Gary Clark, was responsible not only for an increase of visitors on Family Day but also the week leading up to the event. Visitors took advantage of seasonal weather to enjoy the Refuge, including an unusual observation of and least grebe.
