Lake Trout Spawning Surveys Completed By Green Bay Fisheries Office
Midwest Region, November 5, 2004
Print Friendly Version
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Green Bay Fishery Resources Office completed lake trout spawning surveys at Clay Banks and Northeim Reefs in western Lake Michigan between Oct. 19 and Nov. 5, 2004. These reefs are stocked by the Service with yearling lake trout and have historically been surveyed when mature lake trout congregate over the reefs each fall to spawn. Biologists deployed over-night gill-net sets to capture lake trout and collect data on relative spawner abundance, age structure, and sea lamprey wounding rates. Some captured lake trout also contained coded wire tags (CWT's) that were inserted while the fish were still in the hatcheries prior to stocking. The recovery of these CWT's provide additional information such as year class, strain, and stocking location. The Service also collected egg samples from ripe females; these samples were sent to specialized labs for analysis of contaminant levels and potential thiamine deficiencies, both of which may impede successful lake trout reproduction. Biologists use the time-series of spawning survey data to monitor the success of the Service's lake trout stocking program, sea lamprey control efforts, and to identify potential impediments of lake trout restoration (e.g. thiamine deficiencies, low spawner abundance, elevated sea lamprey mortality, etc.).
