Green Bay Fisheries Office Helps EPA Monitor Contaminants in Lake Michigan
Midwest Region, October 8, 2004
Print Friendly Version
The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Green Bay Fishery Resources Office assisted the Environmental Protection Agency's Great Lakes Contaminant Monitoring Program by collecting lake trout from Saugatuck Reef, Lake Michigan. A total of 50 lake trout within a narrow size range, 600-700 mm, were collected with gill-nets between October 6 and 8 from the USFWS Lake Char research vessel. These fish will be sent to specialized labs that utilize a gas chromatograph to detect levels of harmful contaminants such as PCB's and DDT within the fish's flesh. High levels of these contaminants can limit reproductive success in bird and fish populations and pose risks to top predators in the food chain, including humans. The EPA has monitored contaminant levels in Lake Michigan lake trout since 1969 and relies on the Service and other organizations for fish collections to continue this important time-series of data.
