Lower Suwannee & Cedar Keys NWRs Partner with Local Chamber & Florida Museum of Natural History
Southeast Region, October 15, 2004
Print Friendly Version
Lower Suwannee and Cedar Keys NWR staffed several events at the first Nature Coast Wildlife Experience sponsored by Cedar Key Chamber of Commerce. Wildlife Biologist Steve Barlow led visitors into the refuge for viewing of passerine birds while local tour boat operators featured shorebirds and kayak tours. Refuge Ranger Pam Darty introduced live bats to many interested guests and toured several of the refuge bat houses including our large bat house that is home to 15,000 bats. Darty also led two cultural interpretive walks at our Shell Mound archeological site.

During the same weekend, Biologist Barlow was the featured speaker at the University of Florida Natural History Museum's Annual Halloween Bat Program. After years of working in cooperation with Bat Conservation International and gaining notoriety through his work developing cutting-edge bat houses, he was able to bring attention to the habitat work done by refuges everywhere.
