Journal Entry   Back Ramsey Canyon leopard frog repatriation Southwest Region, October 30, 2004 Print Friendly Version AESO and Arizona Game and Fish Department personnel repatriated 13 Ramsey Canyon leopard frogs to the renovated Barchas House Pond on the Coronado National Forest on 30 October 2004. This action is part of a research project funded by a grant from a private donor to develop methods to eliminate chytridomycosis, an amphibian fungal disease, from a population of frogs. The disease is killing frogs and toads around the globe, and developing such techniques could be crucial to saving rare amphibians. The frogs were salvaged in 2003 and then succesfully treated for the disease at the Phoenix Zoo. The pond was dried out, renovated, and then refilled. Monitoring through the winter and next spring will determine if the disease has been eliminated. The Ramsey Canyon leopard frog, which occurs only on the eastern slopes of the Huachuca Mountains, Cochise County, is protected through a multi-party conservation agreement.
