Ruffe Range Expands 110 Km in Lake Superior
Midwest Region, October 8, 2004
Print Friendly Version
A fall aquatic invasive species survey conducted by the Ashland Fishery Resources Office detected the presence of Eurasian ruffe in Marquette harbor, Mich., Lake Superior. On October 6, a 41 mm young-of-the-year (YOY) ruffe was captured in a bottom trawl from a heavy boat slip adjacent to the power facility in lower Marquette harbor. This slip is one of five index transects in Marquette harbor established to monitor for presence and abundance of Eurasian ruffe and other aquatic invasive species. The discovery is 110 km east of the Sturgeon River Sloughs, Keweenaw Waterway, the previous detected eastern boundary of the ruffe range along the south shore of Lake Superior. The ruffe, a member of the perch family, spread rapidly eastward from the Duluth-Superior harbor reaching Ontonagon, Mich., in 1994. Due to the Ruffe Control Plan and unfavorable habitat, ruffe expansion stalled in Ontonagon, until it was detected in the Keweenaw Waterway and Lake Michigan in 2002. Ruffe have a negative impact on yellow perch, and are very invasive. Other catches of interest included over 1000 ninespine stickleback collected from Pequaming Bay and several hundred spottail and emerald shiners collected from the harbor in Grand Marais, Mich. A large catch (110) of YOY ruffe from the Ontonagon River Estuary indicates a new strong year class there.
