Maryland Spill Settlement Creates Duck Habitat in South Dakota
Mountain-Prairie Region, July 1, 2004
Print Friendly Version
An oil spill that claimed 500 ruddy ducks in Maryland will result in the restoration of enough habitat in South Dakota to produce many times that number. Pepco, the offender, agreed with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to restore habitat to make up for the 140,000-gallon spill in April 2000. Although the spill took place in Maryland, the habitat will be restored in northeastern South Dakota, part of the prairie pothole region where the species breeds. Pepco will fund the purchase of permanent easements on 1,853 acres, and the Service will help the property owners manage the land to maximize the production of ruddy ducks and other species.
