E. B. Forsythe NWR Volunteers Present Nature Photography Course
Northeast Region, October 7, 2004
Print Friendly Version
Stay Focused Photo Club and the Friends of Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge presented a 3-session photography course titled "Nature Photography: Shooting Wild (and not so wild) Subjects in Nature." The course was led by refuge volunteer Joe Lomax, a naturalist and photographer, whose desire for adventure has taken him (and his photographic equipment) from dog sledding in Alaska to the Llanos of Venezuela to mining for gemstones in Sri Lanka. He contends, "Nature photography in southern New Jersey rivals any place in the world for opportunities and challenges, our coastal environments, the Pinelands and the very photographable plants and wildlife that live here." Joe was joined by other refuge volunteers Ed Idzik, John Matteoni and Uwe Kils, all outstanding and award-winning nature photographers , who presented several areas of the course. The course included a brief introduction to photography, photographic equipment, composition and lighting. The principal focus was how to take successful photographs of landscapes, portraits of wildflowers and wildlife, in addition to an ecologist's secrets on where and how to find the wonderful natural history subjects available in southern New Jersey and elsewhere. The photography club was established in 2001 to provide education, foster professionalism and ethical conduct, gather and disseminate information, develop standards for nature photographers and promote nature photography as an art form and a medium of communication for the sciences, nature appreciation and environmental protection. It is a member of the North American Nature Photography Association.
