Auto Tour Loop At Julia Butler Hansen NWR
Pacific Region, June 11, 2004
Print Friendly Version
Earlier this summer a simple but effective auto tour route was developed for the Julia Butler Hansen Refuge for the Columbian White-tailed Deer. The loop was developed to celebrate the first annual Julia Butler Hansen day which was held on June 12th of this year. The refuge is named for the popular local legistator and Cathlamet resident who passed away in 1988. The twelve stops on the tour loop talk about the resouce values of the refuge as well provide local history specific to the area. Historical perspectives include native american activities, those of Lewis and Clark who visited the area as well as the more recent changes brought by the white settlers. An auto tour brochure was developed by refuge staff and numbered carsonite signs were installed so vistors could stop and read the narrative appropriate to each location.
