Friends of Dungeness NWR help protect resources by providing education and outreach.
Pacific Region, September 30, 2004
Print Friendly Version
During FY 2004, 126 volunteers spent 8,082 hours providing a variety of public services at Dungeness and Protection Island NWRs.

Friends of Dungeness NWR helped staff the entrance station at Dungeness NWR during the busy summer months. They explained the importance of the Refuge habitat for wildlife, collected fees, and clarified regulations. The Friends sponsored educational lectures, spoke to school groups visiting the Refuge, helped survey and monitor wildlife, helped remove invasive species, and conducted beach clean-ups. Volunteer caretakers live on Dungeness and Protection Island year-round providing public education and protecting resources.

As part of their outreach effort, the Friends of Dungeness NWR set up and staffed Friends/Refuge booths at off-Refuge events. We especially note the following three events:

? The North Olympic Land Trust hosted the StreamFest Celebration at their Ennis Farm location on Sep. 12, 2004. Participants, including several resource protection organizations, shared their ?Vision 2020.? The vision incorporated actions to take now to turn the dream into reality by the year 2020.

? The Dungeness River Audubon Center hosted the River Festival on Sep. 24 and 25, 2004. This year's theme was ?Think Downstream,? encouraging participants to consider how their actions may affect water quality and wildlife habitat.

? On Sep. 25, 2004, the New Dungeness Light Station Association hosted their 10-year anniversary of assuming management of the lighthouse at the tip of Dungeness NWR. The Lighthouse, under jurisdiction of the U.S. Coast Guard, became functional in 1857. Woodrow Wilson established the Dungeness NWR, partially as an overlay to the lighthouse, in 1915. The Refuge and Lighthouse have had a long history of collaboration in resource protection.
