Plankhouse Construction is Underway at Ridgefield NWR
Pacific Region, October 26, 2004
Print Friendly Version
After years of planning, fund-raising and partnership building, construction of the replica Chinookan-style plankhouse is underway at Ridgefield NWR. This project was first conceptualized in 1992 as archeologists were unearthing the Cathlapotle village site at the refuge. In 2001, Refuge and Cultural Resources staff breathed life into the project as part of the upcoming commemoration of Lewis and Clark's visit to Cathlapotle in 1806. The replica is being erected on the Carty unit of Ridgefield NWR and will allow visitors to experience the daily life of Native Americans along this stretch of the Columbia River. This experience will help visitors reconnect to the past and to the land.

The Plankhouse planning team has been working diligently to create the most authentic plankhouse possible in the face of modern safety regulations. This struggle will result in a safe and educational replica of a Chinookan-style plankhouse, even though some historic aspects were compromised for safety's sake. The project is expected to be completed by March 29, 2005.
