James Campbell NWR Hawaiian Stilt Predator Study Update
Pacific Region, September 30, 2004
Print Friendly Version
For many years, survival rates of the endangered Hawaiian Stilt on the Kii Unit of the James Campbell National Wildlife Refuge were lower than hatching rates. Predation was/is thought to be the primary cause. A predator control program for mongoose, rats, and feral cats was initiated and conducted through a contract with USDA-Wildlife Services. These species were chosen because of a past research study on the Refuge unit.

Unfortunately, this predator control program had very little affect on the stilt chick survival rate. Management activities were reevaluated, but predation continued to be the primary suspect. Therefore, a two-year research project to evaluate other predators of stilt chicks was initiated.

2004 was the second and final year of the study. Preliminary results indicate that bull frogs are the primary predator on the Kii Unit. During this study, a percentage of stilt chicks within each clutch were fitted with transmitters and monitored daily along with chicks without transmitters. A high percentage of those chicks with transmitters were found within the bellies of this predator.

A final report is expected to be submitted to Refuge staff by December 31, 2004.
