Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge YCC Projects
Pacific Region, August 6, 2004
Print Friendly Version
The Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) program provided an opportunity for local youth to learn about the environment and wildlife at Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge. The eight week program ran from June 14, 2004 to August 6, 2004 and consisted of five teenagers (3 female and 2 male enrollees) lead by one supervisor.

The main projects completed included maintaining and repairing boundary fences and signs, painting the boat house and fuel building, landscaping the visitor center, and pruning trees. Weekly boat trips down the Snake River to repair goose nesting boxes was a highlight and enjoyed by all. Time was also spent removing invasive weeds. A special overnight trip was taken to Gooding, Idaho to repair fences at a FWS easement.

Trash pick-up was also a regular duty. As part of their environmental education, recycling was incorporated. The team was very proud of their recycling efforts which netted over $300. To add to the fun, the enrollees participate in a ?Diaper Derby?. Over the course of the summer, more than 200 disposable diapers were picked up. The enrollee with the most diapers (88) was given a prize at the end of the season.

Several environmental education trips were taken including a trip to the World Center for Birds of Prey to learn about raptors and the California condor breeding program, the Morrison-Knudsen Nature Center, and a tour of the Hagerman National Fish Hatchery. Various environmental topics were also discussed while doing projects.
