Tualatin River NWR Expands Refuge Boundary for Habitat Restoration Project
Pacific Region, September 9, 2004
Print Friendly Version
The refuge is currently planning a project to implement habitat restoration and management in the Scholls unit of the refuge in Washington County. This project complements conservation actions of other partners also aimed at restoring and enhancing habitat for endangered species, fish, and migratory birds on a watershed basis. At 175 acres, it's the second largest habitat improvement undertaking since the refuge was established in 1992. The area proposed for restoration once supported intact habitats of seasonal emergent, forested, and scrub-shrub wetlands, as well as Oregon ash riparian forest. Furthermore, the reach of the Tualatin River bordering the area, once provided quality habitat for upper Willamette River steelhead--now federally listed as a threatened species. In order to fully implement the project as designed, the approved refuge boundary was expanded by 2.28 acres known as the ?Burchfield Addition.? This addition is a critical link to successfully meeting habitat goals of the larger project, specifically for restoring 30 acres of seasonal emergent wetland. Because of the very gradual contours of the floodplain, a portion the neighboring Burchfield property, based on the project's design, would likely flood. Acquiring the Burchfield property precludes the need to construct and maintain additional costly infrastructure and will allow the full 30 acres of seasonal emergent wetland to be restored, also making this expansion the most cost effective approach over the long term.
