Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge Hosts Congressional Staff
Pacific Region, September 29, 2004
Print Friendly Version
For an entire day in late September, Tualatin River NWR staff met and conducted an information sharing field tour of the refuge with Avalyn Taylor of Congressman Wu's Portland Field Office. The tour visited all of the major land units of Tualatin River refuge, as well as the entire study area of the proposed Wapato Lake NWR. The tour and discussions primarily focused on resource matters including everything from land acquisition, surrounding land use development issues, floodplain ecological dynamics and function, invasive species management, and current restoration and management planning efforts to planning status and land use issues associated with the Wapato Lake Planning Study and Tualatin River's future Comprehensive Conservation Plan.

Discussions also touched on a number of projected municipal development needs of Washington County. Congressman Wu's office is becoming heavily engaged in these developments, and as a result, is beginning to explore how these projects fit into the ?big picture? relative to resource management values. As a result of this congressional interest, the refuge is likely to become more involved as one of many stakeholders of a taskforce charged with finding consensus and common ground for these major developments which could have far-reaching implications affecting both Tualatin River and Wapato Lake.

Refuge staff appreciated the opportunity to share with Congressman Wu's office the history, resource value and management practices of refuge lands and how they fit into the greater Portland area.

Congressman Wu has shown continued interest in the Refuge System and the refuge staff looks forward to future visits with his staff.
