Tualatin River NWR Reaches Major Development Milestone
Pacific Region, May 15, 2004
Print Friendly Version
More than a dozen gold shovels flashed as Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge's partners joined together to break ground for the construction of new visitor service facilities on the Steinborn Unit of the refuge. The groundbreaking ceremony on May 15, 2004 was part of the refuge's annual Songbird Festival that attracted 650 people to the refuge.

?On the Wings of Change ? A Vision Takes Flight? is the slogan for the visitor facilities campaign, which has been a broad community-based endeavor drawing support from local citizens, non-profit organizations, regional governments and elected officials. New facilities will include an entrance road and parking area, year-round nature trails, wildlife observation overlooks, photography blind, interpretive features, and environmental education study sites. Once open to the public, the refuge anticipates 100,000 visitors annually, and an additional 10 percent being students. The Refuge Grand Opening is anticipated for late 2005.
