Mora Stocks Gila Trout into East Fork Mogollon Creek
Southwest Region, October 14, 2004
Print Friendly Version
Mora NFH&TC in cooperation with New Mexico FRO stocked 1040 South Diamond lineage Gila trout into recently renovated stretches of Mogollon Creek, Grant County, New Mexico as part of the recovery efforts for the endangered Gila trout.

These fish were produced under the guidelines of the "Gila Trout-Genetic Broodstock Managememt Plan" written by BRD/USGS scientists. Mora was testing the plan as written to ensure the Service has the space and manpower necessary to fully implement the procedures. The plan utilizes a 2X2 cross using fish from two source populations to preserve available genetic diversity within the relict lineages. Individual matings are incubated separately, then combined into family lots for rearing. At significant life stages, families donate equal numbers of progeny for the broodstock and excess fish are availabe for recovery stocking as directed by the Gila Trout Recovery Team.

All Gila trout produced at Mora in the future will utilize this regime and significantly contribute to the recovery of the species in the future.
