Journal Entry   Back KENAI: Glacier Creek Fire Declared Out Alaska Region, October 5, 2004 Print Friendly Version The Glacier Creek Fire within Kenai National Wildlife Refuge was declared out on October 5, 2004 after three successive overflights without smoke being detected. The human caused wildfire was discovered on August 14, 2004 on the far side of Tustumena Lake in a limited suppression zone. The fire grew to approximately 6,000 acres in the subsequent weeks. Refuge fire personnel, along with other fire crews, successfully protected all historic and private cabins within the area and professionally managed the fire with no significant costs or human injury. While smoke caused concern to some citizens for several days, general public support was generated because of the work of the crews, value of the fire in creating future fuel breaks, and regeneration of mature and dead spruce forest to benefit moose and other wildlife. The Glacier Creek Fire was one of 17 wildland fires on the Refuge in 2004, all but one of which was human caused.
