Big Muddy Takes Action on Refuge Week

In celebration of National Wildlife Refuge week the Big Muddy National Fish and Wildlife Refuge worked with the Friends of Big Muddy to put their muscles in action for conservation. The refuge was in need of an information kiosk at a recently acquired island on the Missouri River. The challenge of the project was to haul the 400+ pound kiosk downriver approximately five miles to the island (by boat) then hoist it up a steep embankment (by hand), then install it in preset brackets. The task was completed with seven volunteers who all admitted they were sore the next day. In addition to installing the kiosk the volunteers built steps up the embankment to the kiosk. The steps were then reinforced with rock to minimize erosion. The work required a lot of pounding and lifting. ?It was hard work, but I really enjoyed it,? stated Brent Wade, 4th grade teacher from Derby Ridge Elementary School, and new member of the Friends of Big Muddy. ?My fingers even hurt to type.?

The weather was clear and the air was cool, and the boat ride was even cooler! The work was completed in a couple hours and there were many nodding heads on the two-hour vehicle ride home. The refuge now has another new kiosk thanks to some friends who were willing to take action to help conservation during the National Wildlife Refuge Week on the Big Muddy.
