KENAI: Refuge Completes Centennial Trail
Alaska Region, October 15, 2004
Print Friendly Version
Refuge workers recently completed improvements to the Centennial Trail at the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge headquarters area near Soldotna. The three-mile long trail was initiated last year to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the National Wildlife Refuge System. A time capsule, to be opened in 2103, is buried at the start of the trail. Work recently completed includes a loop so that hikers are not required to backtrack any portion of the route, and widening to allow for cross-country skiers to enjoy the trail during winter months. The trail was popular with wildlife watchers and hikers from all over the world during summer 2004. The improvements should make it even more popular for year-round visitors far into the future.
