The Forest Landbird Legacy Program
Southeast Region, September 22, 2004
Print Friendly Version
Partners for Fish and Wildlife biologists from North Carolina recently joined together with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) and the Natural Resources Conservation Service to develop a statewide program to benefit migratory birds of conservation concern identified by the Partners in Flight assessment for North Carolina. The Forest Landbird Legacy Program offers landowners with large tracts of mature forests an opportunity to enhance their forest land for the benefit of migratory songbirds Birds such as the Black-Throated and Kentucky Warbler, Wood Thrush, Northern Parula, Summer Tanager will benefit from this program. Wildlife biologists and foresters from the partnering agencies will work with landowners to develop a landbird management plan. Non-industrial forest landowners may receive funding to complete the plans once they are approved. Funds have been made available to the NCWRC by a Partners for Fish and Wildlife grant. Two pilot projects began this year. The first, located in the mountains, targets invasive plants in a 350-acre hardwood forest. Another project in the coastal plain will reintroduce fire and favor longleaf pine and birds dependant on the longleaf pine ecosystem.
