Youth Fishing Derby Brings Smiles at Cape May National Wildlife Refuge
Northeast Region, October 3, 2004
Print Friendly Version
The Cape May National Wildlife Refuge held its second annual youth fishing derby on October 3. The derby was held at the refuge's beach on Delaware Bay where salt water fishing has been good and the weather was perfect. The 20 participants ranged in ages from 5 to 17 years old, and with the high tide bringing fish in, a variety of species were caught, including flounder, eels, croakers, bluefish and many other unknown big ones that got away.

The refuge provided rods, bait, drinks and snacks to participants, many of whom were new to fishing. Prizes including tackle boxes, a $25 gift certificate donated by Al's Bait and Tackle, stickers, and a fishing reel donated by Cap't Tates Bait and Tackle. The prizes were awarded to children who caught the biggest and smallest fish and strangest catch (a horseshoe crab). Every child who attended received a prize, as well as a goodie bag filled with refuge system information like coloring books, key chains, maps, and brochures.

The event gave 20 youth participants and 10 adults a chance to learn about fishing techniques and ethics, environmental stewardship, fish biology and fishing safety. They also learned about the mission and purpose of the National Wildlife Refuge System and the Service, and the role played by the Cape May National Wildlife Refuge.
