The Rural Fire Assistance program is intended to improve firefighter safety and enhance the wildland protection capabilities of rural and volunteer fire departments when they respond to wildland fires both on and off of federal lands by providing funds for training, equipment purchases and fire prevention work on a cost-shared basis. Region 1 targeted those fire departments that routinely help fight fires on or near U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service lands. During fiscal year 2004, Region 1 provided through assistance grants $67,500 in funding to 16 rural fire departments. These grants ranged from $1,500 to $10,000. Additionally, $102,000 was also granted to organizations in the states of Oregon and California to be distributed to departments which assist in wildland fire suppression on refuge lands.
