Hakalau Forest NWR Challenge Cost Share Accomplishments - FY2004
Pacific Region, September 30, 2004
Print Friendly Version
This project is titled "Restore Native Forest Habitat for Endangered and Native Birds and Other Native Species through Control of Invasive Weeds at Hakalau Forest NWR".

Under supervision from Refuge staff, seventeen volunteer organizations (228 volunteers) provided 2,024 hours of volunteer labor to manually remove banana poka from 100 acres of land at Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge. The volunteers pulled small banana poka vines by hand and used pruning shears and bush knives to clear large poka vines. The Wilderness Volunteers served as the ?umbrella organization? and represented the coalition of partners by signing the Cooperative Agreement with The Fish and Wildlife Service. Challenge Cost Share funds provided by the Service were used to hire a contractor who will use brush-clearing tools and EZ-Ject lances armed with herbicide-filled capsules to remove and kill English holly on approximately 200 acres of Refuge land by August 31, 2005. Banana poka and holly removal will facilitate the natural re-growth and succession of native plants and the Hawaiian rain forest community.
