Journal Entry   Back SELAWIK: A New Partnership and a New Bridge Alaska Region, September 1, 2004 Print Friendly Version The Selawik National Wildlife Refuge and Northwest Arctic Borough are pleased to announce the completion of a semi permanent bridge across the Singauruk River. Working together, the Refuge and Borough designed and constructed a bridge with an environmentally friendly footprint to meet the needs of winter snow machine travelers. The 6 ft wide, 30 ft long bridge replaces a temporary structure and is an alternative to a proposed 1.2 million dollar highway bridge having a 10 ft width and 180 ft span. The new structure will provide a safe winter crossing point for refuge travelers. The Singauruk River rarely freezes solid in the winter. Crossing it by snow machine can be a risky proposition, especially as spring approaches. The Refuge provided the materials and the Borough designed and constructed the bridge with crews from the surrounding villages. Western Arctic Parklands Archeologists conducted the archeological reconnaissance for us.
