Lower Suwannee and Cedar Keys refuges celebrate special anniversaries
Southeast Region, August 1, 2004
Print Friendly Version
It was the 75th anniversary for Cedar Keys NWR, the 150th for the Cedar Keys Lighthouse, and the 25th for Lower Suwannee NWR. To celebrate them all, the staff organized an open house, inviting all comers to a special event featuring interactive exhibits, marine animal touch tanks, and lots more. The highlight of the day was a reenactment of the ?life of a lighthouse keeper.? With refuge volunteers dressed in 1870s-style clothing and the lighthouse decorated with period furniture, visitors were able to get a realistic picture of life at the lighthouse ? the way it used to be. After a full day of activities for some 400 visitors (who were able to get there only by boat), the real celebration began. More than 60 guests were treated to celebration speeches, a moving dedication ceremony and then a lighthouse keeper's dinner. Among the VIPs were Assistant Regional Director for Refuges and Wildlife, Jon Andrew, and Area IV Supervisor, Lou Hinds.
