Pacific Region, August 13, 2004

Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge, YCC building a wheelchair accessible trail - photo by Wayne WilkersonThis year's Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) completed many worthwhile projects at Kootenai NWR which ranged from pulling noxious weeds to trail work to building a wheelchair accessible trail. YCC Group Leader, Devonna Dixon, led the group with the assistance of Kootenai NWR's Maintenance Worker, Wayne Wilkerson, in completing a wide variety of projects around the refuge. This years enrollees were Christa Bauer of Naples (Bonners Ferry High School), Felicity Mills of Bonners Ferry (Seventh Day Adventist Church School), Bill Runyon of Bonners Ferry, (Bonners Ferry High School), and Josh Wilkerson of Naples (Bonners Ferry High School).

The most notable project was the 500 foot long wheelchair accessible trail that the YCC group built. The trail leads to a waterfowl hunting blind that is currently under construction by Brandon Bergman, who is working on obtaining his eagle scout badge.

Environmental awareness training was provided to the group over the course of the summer and included trips to learn about the geological history of the area's mountains and lakes; a tour of a local dam; and a tour at the Kootenai Tribal Fish Hatchery where they are rearing white sturgeon.
