Maine Fishery Resources Office Creates Environmental Database System
Northeast Region, August 27, 2004
Print Friendly Version
The Maine Fishery Resources Office has created a database system designed to collect information on environmental conditions to which Atlantic salmon are exposed in the hatchery or in the river. Tracking these conditions will allow biologists to evaluate and improve our recovery efforts for this federally endangered species.

The environmental database system consists of a series of three relational databases that organize environmental data pertinent to the assessment of the Atlantic salmon recovery program. The Craig Brook National Fish Hatchery Temperature database records water temperature, flow, and water chemistry data at the hatchery. The Flow 2.0 database holds information relating to in-stream flow, water temperature, and water chemistry of rivers stocked with fish from the hatchery. Climatic conditions such as air temperature, precipitation, and snow pack are stored in a third database, Climatic 2.0.

Staff at the hatchery, U.S. Geological Survey gauging stations and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weather stations in the Gulf of Maine have been collecting data for decades, but these data have not been compared until now. By drawing correlations between environmental conditions and hatchery conditions at time of stocking, these databases can provide some insight into the quality of hatchery product and the relative success of stocking practices.

The environmental database system is designed to provide a broader picture of restoration/recovery activities by supplementing the information maintained in the spawning, stocking, tagging, and fish-capture databases used by the hatchery, NOAA Fisheries, and Maine's Atlantic Salmon Commission.
