Great Lakes Islands Conservation Receives $100K Grant
Midwest Region, July 1, 2004
Print Friendly Version
The Collaborative for the Binational Conservation of Great Lakes Islands, sprung from the Great Lakes Basin Ecosystem Team's Islands Committee, is the recipient of a second year of funding from U.S. EPA's Great Lakes National Program Office (GLNPO). The $100,000 grant award was announced in June 2004, and will be available for FY 2005. The Collaborative's mission states, "This is a binational initiative to establish the framework to guide the conservation of the biological diversity of the islands of the Great Lakes through science, policy, collaboration, and stewardship." The Collaborative, comprised of representatives from the Service, The Nature Conservancy, Nature Conservancy Canada, Parks Canada, University of Minnesota, and the Northeast-Midwest Institute, will implement a second year of Great Lakes Islands conservation activities. Proposed products and initiatives for FY2005 include the following: presentation of newly developed SOLEC islands indicators at the October SOLEC conference in Toronto; a comprehensive three-stage island threat assessment; identification of island biodiversity investment areas (IBIA) by overlaying the results of the threat analysis and the Priority Island Areas identified during the first year of work; a Strategic Action Plan providing an over-arching, concise, action-oriented approach for conservation of IBIAs; and continued communication and outreach between the Collaborative and stakeholders, island landowners, and interested parties through our website and personal interactions. Furthermore, alternate funding sources are being actively sought to fund projects such as a Great Lakes Islands Biodiversity Atlas, a multi-jurisdictional Great Lakes island policy analysis, an island fish spawning inventory, and a colonial nesting waterbird island site ranking. The collaborative actively seeks to expand our conservation network by developing relationships with other individuals, organizations, and government agencies interested in island conservation. The first year of GLNPO funding has allowed the Collaborative to complete the following actions by the end of fiscal year 2004: creation of a peer-reviewed Great Lakes island ranking system; development of draft SOLEC islands indicators; identification of priority island areas; development of a Great Lakes islands classification system; expansion of the binational Great Lakes Islands GIS database; development of education and outreach materials including a Great Lakes islands website; presentation of an Islands conservation session at the 2004 International Association of Great Lakes Research meeting; and expansion of our island conservation network.
