Assistant Interior Secretary Griles Visits Project Site
Midwest Region, August 11, 2004
Print Friendly Version
J. Steven Griles, Assistant Secretary of the Interior, along with Steven La Tourette, 14th District Ohio Congressman, Reynoldsburg Ecological Services Field Office, greeted school board members, chamber of commerce and many local well wishers as they publicly announced the beginning of construction of a new High School for the Ashtabula area. The project, although controversial at times, brought together some partners who were genuinely ready to work together to get the job done and to accomodate the needs of the environment. The announcement marked the culmination of many hours of hard work on the part of all those involved and represented the best of what the Assistant Secretary called a "win-win" situation. After making some remarks to those assembled and receiving some gifts from the group, Assistant Secretary Griles and Congressman LaTourette toured the site and carefully examined the areas where conservation easements were to be set aside so that habitat would be available for the Indiana bat for years to come. In addition, construction limits had been carefully modified to preserve and avoid habitat so that the very best habitat was provided for the bat. The project site will truly be a "learning lab" for the school children of Ashtabula, for they will only have to go out the backdoor of their school to be in the midst of Indiana bat habitat. And as Assistant Secretary Griles remarked at the celebration, "this will be a story we will be proud to tell our grandkids and their kids -- it will be 'The story about a bat.'"
