Heinz Refuge Staff Assist with Roundup of Oiled Geese
Northeast Region, July 22, 2004
Print Friendly Version
Staff members from the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum were part of a multi-partner effort on July 22, 2004, when several dozen oiled waterfowl were discovered at a retention basin in Newtown, Bucks County, Pa. Facilities Manager Mike McMenamin, maintenance staffer Ed Ramos, biologists Rob Allen and Brendalee Phillips and intern Christine Czarnecki responded to the call for assistance in rounding up the birds. The staff were part of a multi-organizational team that included Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research, Inc., from Newark, Del., the Pennsylvania Game Commission, Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, Newtown Township Park Commission, and Newtown Fire and Rescue.

Fifty-five Canada Geese and three mallards were captured over the course of the day. They were taken to Tri-State Bird Rescue for cleaning and rehabilitation. Three of the geese died, but all the other birds were reported to be doing well and scheduled to be released once fully recovered.

It was determined that cooking oil from a nearby restaurant had been dumped into a storm drain and eventually found its way into the basin. The restaurant owner acknowledged what had happened and was going to cover expenses incurred due to the incident.
