American Oystercatcher Productivity in 2004 Reported
Northeast Region, August 2, 2004
Print Friendly Version
Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge staff monitored American oystercatcher productivity in 2004 on Fisherman Island. There were 50 documented nesting pairs of American oystercatchers. These 50 pair produced 60 known nesting attempts and fledged 5 young, for a productivity of 0.1 fledged birds per pair. No nests were suspected to have been lost due to raccoon depredation. Avian depredation appears to have been a major factor in low productivity, but most nest fates remain unknown. We are attempting to coordinate a research project to investigate the low productivity.

Six chicks were banded with the new banding scheme devised by the American Oystercatcher Working Group. Birds from Massachusetts to Georgia are being banded according to this protocol.
