Breton NWR receives help from the local community
Southeast Region, July 1, 2004
Print Friendly Version
With the help of 12 state, federal, and private partners, more than $60,000 was raised to help restore Breton NWR, the second oldest refuge in the national wildlife refuge system. For the last three years, dedicated volunteers from local 4-H clubs, high schools, the Audubon Nature Institute, and Conoco Phillips contributed over 1,000 hours of volunteer service during which time they constructed 3,000 feet of sand fence and planted more than 15,000 beach plants. Project success was evident when the four-foot high fence was buried by sand in less than 8 months. The sand fences and newly established vegetation are successfully building dunes and stabilizing the fragile island.
