The staff from Pocosin Lakes NWR (Howard Phillips, Wendy Stanton, Debbie McGowan, and intern Walter ?Deet? James, Jr.)successfully completed a 10-day outreach and education program at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival at Washington DC's National Mall, June 23 thru July 4. More than one million people attend the event each year. The refuge staff was invited to celebrate their partnership with Pocosin Arts and the Tyrrell County Schools in regards to the Millennium Forest project. This was a critical event for the refuge staff to participate in, and was a chance to educate an audience about the environment far beyond the reaches of Tyrrell, Hyde and Washington Counties in North Carolina. It was an honor for us to be there and promote the National Wildlife Refuge System while focusing on our fruitful partnerships.
