Workshop Brings Red Wolves to the Classroom
Southeast Region, May 25, 2004
Print Friendly Version
Sixteen educators attended the first-ever red wolf recovery Teacher Workshop at Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge on May 25th. The one-day workshop attracted teachers and park rangers from across North Carolina, who were hoping to learn more about the recovery of one of America's most endangered mammals and, in the meantime, enhance their curricula and repertoire of environmental education activities. The workshop, which counts toward the North Carolina Environmental Education Certificate, marks the first-ever federal partnership with North Carolina's Department of Environment and Natural Resources Environmental Education Certification Program. The certification program is a state-wide initiative providing intensive environmental education training to formal and non-formal educators. In exchange for the free workshop, each participant commits to teach a lesson from the red wolf curriculum. Workshop facilitators Janice Lane of Alligator River NWR and Sarah Krueger of the red wolf recovery program hope to offer future workshops, as the event benefits teachers and red wolves alike.
