YUKON FLATS: Roadside View of the Roadless Yukon Flats
Alaska Region, August 1, 2004
Print Friendly Version
A new interpretive site at mile 86.7 of the Dalton Highway provides visitors a glimpse of the 8.6-million acre Yukon Flats National Wildlife Refuge. The overlook is located on a hill high above the Dalton Highway and offers an outstanding view of the southwestern corner of the Refuge. Three interpretive signs mounted on a wooden observation deck provide information about the refuge, its importance to nesting waterfowl, and the role that wildland fires play in maintaining natural and productive wildlife habitats.

The new site was a cooperative project between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which manages the Yukon Flats National Wildlife Refuge, and the Bureau of Land Management, which has management responsibility for the Dalton Highway Corridor.

A sign to alert visitors to the overlook has not yet been erected on the highway. However, through word of mouth, tour guides are making this overlook a destination on their Dalton Highway and Arctic Circle tours.
